Just getting back from the Interbike dealer show in Las Vegas, and one of the major topics of conversation was the fabulous advances being made in the science of athletic nutrition supplements. Bars, gels, tabs, goos, electrolytes, drinks, and programs were all being proposed as the answer to your needs.

Encourage Children to Bike to School

The number of children biking or walking to school plummets more and more every year. Some parents are unwilling to allow their children the ability to be independent and mature enough to deliver themselves to school. But still there many organizations federal, state and community that still push to encourage parents to allow their kids to bike or walk to school. October 8th 2008 is bike and walk to school day, www.walktoschool-usa.org
Children and parents on this day ban together for hopefully a change in habits. Parents who ride with their children not only get to spend quality time together, but also provide their child with invaluable training in road awareness such as stopping, looking both ways before crossing the road and waiting for the little green man at the pedestrian signal. Busy parents who are not able to spare the extra time to ride with your child or the child is responsible enough to bike on their own, here are a few tips to make sure their ride to school is a safe one:
• Make sure your child is wearing bright colors or even a bright colored backpack will work. The brighter colors will help make motorist more aware of them on the road.
• Children under the age of 18 must wear a helmet, it’s the law. Be sure the helmet fits properly, our bike shop will help you fit the helmet properly if you are having trouble. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of brain injury and death by up to 85 percent. Worth it? I’d say yes!
• Educate & reaffirm daily basic bike safety; obey traffic signals and signs, ride on the right hand side of the street, give cars and pedestrians the right of way and always stay in complete control of your bike.
Children who are making this change from the daily drop off via car to pedaling their bike are coming to school more alert and ready to face the day. Parents save time in the morning by allowing their kids to bike or walk to school. Kids have a chance to socialize with their friends, develop some independence & confidence. Also to top it all off providing an opportunity for exercise which helps tackle the increasing child obesity rate. Bike Shop in Orange County Sees Bright Future for Bicycles
Rock N' Road Cycles now has 4 state-of-the-art bike shops in Orange County, Ca. The latest one opened in Irvine last year, and is already being visited by other shop owners to see what the future of cycling looks like. This store is a Specialized Concept Store, which means that the owners of Rock N' Road and Specialized Bicycle Company worked together to create a retail experience that is beyond that of any other bicycle retailer within 50 miles.
Company founder, Matt Ford, explains that this store and the three other Rock N' Road Cycle stores in OC are going to just keep improving on their advantage: "We have just added the most advanced bicycle fitting system available to our Irvine location. The Specialized BG Data fitting system provides computerized analysis of every part of your riding style from both the side and the front while you are actually riding and under load."
The other three stores, located in Laguna Niguel, Anaheim Hills, and Mission Viejo, provide the bicycling community in OC with more than just a place to buy a bike. Matt continues: "We want to provide riders with everything they need to maximize their riding experience. That goes far beyond gear and includes classes, rides, clubs, and involvement in the racing and touring communities."
Rock N' Road encourages your feedback in this blog. We'd love to hear how you think we are doing, and your suggestions for how we might do better.

Bicycle Fitting - BG Video Capture Now Avaiable at Irvine Store
The bicycle and the apparel manufactured by Specialized conform to their Body Geometry (BG) approach. The better that every element of the bicycle conforms to the benefit of the rider, the longer the rider can ride with more comfort, less fatigue, fewer injuries, and more power. Over the past several years various companies have been adding bits and pieces of bicycle fitting equipment into the repertoire of certified fitting specialists. Now Specialized Bicycle Company has broken through with equipment substantially more advanced than anything else on the market.
As you will see in the video below, the Video Capture system makes it possible to look at the riders form frame by frame, under load. The resulting information provided to the fitting specialist allows them to make recommendations as to stem length, saddle height, shoe and pedal changes, and changes in form that will dramatically improve every aspect of your riding.
